The National Arts and Disability Strategy Working Group is chaired by the Australian Government (Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts) and includes all jurisdictions.
The group is gathering information on activities across jurisdictions which aim to increase access and participation in the arts for people with a disability. It is identifying shared priorities and opportunities for cross-jurisdictional collaboration on arts and disability issues.
The group will develop a principles-based National Arts and Disability Strategy to improve coordination and collaboration across governments to ensure that all Australians with a disability are given the opportunity to engage fully in the arts and cultural activity.
Public consultations were held in late 2008 to allow all Australians to provide input to the development of a National Arts and Disability Strategy. A Discussion Paper available in accessible formats was released by the Cultural Ministers Council on 2 October 2008.
A strong response was received from a broad range of stakeholders on issues of importance and ideas for improving access and participation for people with a disability in arts and cultural activities. This feedback will inform the development of the Strategy.
It is anticipated the National Arts and Disability Strategy will be finalised for release in late 2009.
