Indigenous intellectual property toolkit

The Cultural Ministers Council agreed to develop an Indigenous intellectual property (IIP) toolkit to:

  • promote greater links between business and Indigenous communities about IIP;
  • raise awareness in Indigenous communities, consumers and commercial operators of the need to protect IIP; and
  • enhance coordination of existing networks of Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations working in the area of IIP.

The Indigenous Intellectual Property Toolkit Implementation Working Group has been established to:

  • investigate implementation options;
  • ensure these options meet the broader objectives of the IIP; and
  • present options to the Cultural Ministers Council for consideration.

The working group is chaired by the Australian Government. Other participating jurisdictions are Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. The Australia Council is also represented on the working group.
