In September 2006, the Cultural Ministers Council agreed to make contemporary music a priority. In November 2006, the Standing Committee established the Contemporary Music Development Working Group.
The working group’s role is to consider and develop opportunities for the Cultural Ministers Council to work collaboratively to support the growth of the contemporary music industry.
The working group will identify, where appropriate, opportunities for cross jurisdictional strategies and projects in these areas:
The working group will work with agencies and organisations and seek to complement other mechanisms to further these aims.
The working group is chaired by the Australian Government (Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts) and includes representatives from all Australian states and territories.
Australian contemporary music is defined as music that is currently being written by Australians and recorded or performed. Its genres include blues, country, electronic/dance, experimental, folk, funk, hiphop, jazz, metal, pop, rock, roots, world.
